FLOW PACK / PILLOW PACK

Technology description

Flow pack, also known as pillow pack, is a flexible packaging format designed to wrap individual or grouped products using a film that forms around the product and is sealed longitudinally and transversely.

It is one of the most widely used formats in high-speed automatic lines, especially when efficiency, protection, clean presentation, and consistency in continuous packaging processes are required.

Flow pack can be adapted to solid, portioned, frozen, refrigerated, or ready-to-eat products, depending on the selected structure, sealing system, required barrier, and distribution conditions.

Structure and materials

Flow pack can be manufactured with different laminated, coextruded, or monomaterial structures, depending on the product, shelf life, and machine performance required.

Structures may include materials such as:

•BOPP
• CPP
• PET
• PE
• MDO PE
• Coated or laminated paper
• Metallized films
• EVOH for oxygen barrier
• Cold seal for heat sensitive products
• Inks, adhesives, and varnishes compatible with the final application.

Structures can be developed for:

• Heat sealing
• Cold sealing • High-speed packaging
• Moisture barrier
• Oxygen barrier
• Grease or aroma barrier
• Light protection, when metallized or pigmented film is used
• Good machinability on horizontal or vertical lines
• Printed or transparent presentation.

Key performance benefits

  • High efficiency on automatic packaging lines

  • Suitable for individual products or multipacks

  • Good control of longitudinal and transverse
    sealing

  • Compact and clean presentation
  • Lower material use compared to some rigid
    packaging
  • Good protection against handling, dust, and
    surface moisture
  • Compatible with transparent, printed,
    metallized, or high-barrier structures

  • Can be adapted to heat sealing or cold seal

  • Enables high production speed

  • Supports format standardization and
    operational control
  • Strong option for mass-consumption
    products

Typical applications

  • Cereal and protein bars
  • Chocolates, cookies, and
    confectionery
  • Bakery and pastry products
  • Individual snacks
  • Ice cream and frozen products
  • Portioned cheeses

  • Processed meats
  • Selected fresh products

  • Pharmaceutical or nutraceutical products
  • Personal care
  • Promotional products or
    samples
  • Food multipacks

Blue Pack Advantage

Blue Pack Solutions develops structures for flow pack and pillow pack by considering the product, packaging speed, sealing type, required barrier, and real distribution and display conditions.

Our approach makes it possible to select the right film for each application, from conventional solutions to high-barrier, cold seal, monomaterial, or recyclable structures, seeking the right balance between operational efficiency, product protection, and commercial presentation.
