Packaging: a key element for petfood quality.

Packaging is the first point of contact between pet parents and our product on the shelf, making its design a key factor in the purchase decision. However, beyond aesthetics, packaging is essential for preserving the nutritional quality and food safety of petfood. Of course, the right packaging depends on the type of product (dry, semi-moist, wet, etc.).

When it comes to dry and semi-moist food, the selected material must be resistant to the handling the product experiences throughout the distribution chain. It must also act as a barrier against external factors such as moisture, odors, fats, etc. At the same time, it should prevent the product’s internal fats or aromas from escaping into the environment.

One of the main challenges for packaging is preserving the nutritional quality of the food. Due to the fat content in petfood, poor barrier performance can lead to rancidity. Rancidity not only alters the taste and smell of the food—often leading to product rejection by dogs or cats—but also destroys fat-soluble vitamins and reduces protein solubility, which decreases digestibility. In addition, rancidity promotes the formation of toxic metabolites such as aldehydes, which can be harmful to the animal’s health.

From a food safety perspective, packaging also plays a crucial role. Moisture ingress can alter water activity and lead to moisture absorption by the product, promoting the growth of microorganisms like mold and bacteria, which compromises the safety of the petfood.

The industry has continuously sought to extend shelf life through improved packaging structures. Another effective strategy is the injection of inert gases into the packaging (modified atmosphere), which significantly enhances product viability.

Another important factor when selecting packaging materials is the potential interaction between the packaging and the product. It’s essential to avoid materials that might impart off-odors or unwanted tastes, which could lead to product rejection by pets.

Conclusion

There are many aspects to consider when choosing the right packaging structure for petfood. It is highly recommended to consult with an expert to identify the best options for your product together.
